Yellow City CBD
Russell Hawkins of Yellow City CBD Has A Strong Background of
Medication Knowledge and the Design To Assist His Customers On
Their Natural Journey of Incorporating CBD Products
With the saturation of CBD products that has taken over Amarillo, it can be comforting to work with a store that is owned and operated by a man who spent the majority of his life working in our local healthcare industry. Russell Hawkins, owner of Yellow City CBD, was a Clinical Pharmacy Technician with Northwest Hospital for 21 years. In the middle of his pharmacy career, Russell and his family found their own sanctuary in a cabin in the mountains of Colorado. While spending time in Colorado, Russell watched the rise of the legalization of marijuana in their community. He worked with and had friends in the industry so he saw the medical benefits. When CBD was made legal in 2018, it was the perfect avenue to marry Russell’s medical background and his education of the natural benefits of the hemp plant. Russell is able to “prescribe” a natural medication while educating you on the benefits for you and your family.
Russell was born here in Amarillo and ended up spending his formative years being raised in the Dallas area. Russell’s parents moved back to Amarillo and by the time he was 22, he wanted a sense of community so he moved back and has been here every since. Once back in Amarillo, Russell went to Amarillo College and studied Television Production, Mass Communications and Pre-Pharmacy. From Amarillo College, Russell began his career at Northwest Texas Hospital in 1989 as a Clinical Pharmacy Technician. During his 21 years with the hospital, Russell did physician order entry and worked with chemo, narcotics, IV solutions and code carts. There were “satellite pharmacies” in every different department of the hospital so Russell was able to move from the surgery pharmacy to the ICU to the NICU and PICU units. Russell enjoyed being able to move through different departments and work different cases throughout the hospital and the sense of accomplishment in being part of a large health care team.
Russell met his wife Kathy in 1987 while “cruising Polk street” and in 1990 they had their son Wes. In 1995 they began to look for land in Colorado with future plans to build a vacation cabin. In 1998 they found their land on a mountain in Cuchara, Colorado. That first year they had the land, they slept in tents and the next year they stayed in a pop up camper while they began to build their cabin. Russell loved the excitement and face paced environment at the hospital and then being able to pack up and head to Colorado with not a person within miles and miles. It was during this time that Russell would see the beginnings of the legalization of medical marijuana in 2009 and recreationally later in 2014 in the state of Colorado.
In 2018, a Farm Bill made the production and sales of hemp and hemp derived products such as CBD legal nationwide. The Hemp Farming Act of 2018 was a proposed law to remove hemp (defined as cannabis with less than 0.3% THC) from Schedule I controlled substances and making it an ordinary agricultural commodity. Its provisions were incorporated in the 2018 United States farm bill that became law on December 20, 2018. Russell explains, “I have been involved in the Colorado legal cannabis industry since 2016. In the process, I've learned that with CBD, you get the medical benefits of cannabis without getting the psychoactive effect of feeling "high". I feel that antiquated laws have prevented people from having access to CBD. The Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (aka the Farm Bill) made CBD officially legal, and now people are discovering its many benefits.” It was at this time that Russell started bringing CBD products back from Colorado and selling them to his friends and family.
According to Russell, “The human body has CBD receptors so it’s like we’re intended to have CBD.” Some of the conditions CBD can treat are: inflammation, chronic pain, muscle aches, nerve pain, epilepsy, headaches, Parkinson's disease, arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, sleep disorders such as insomnia, stress and anxiety, skin conditions, PTSD, glaucoma and Chron's disease. Rehab clinics are now using CBD to help with withdrawal from opioids and other drugs. And studies show CBD may slow cancer cell growth. CBD is also beneficial to dogs and cats for a variety of conditions, including pain relief and decrease inflammation, to help calm pets, and even for epilepsy.
“A lot of our medications today have come from natural flora, plants, trees and things like that. I believe the cannabis and hemp plant have been held back because it has been illegal. We’ve had a medical gold mine this whole time.”
