Pieces- A Design Merchantile
A Mother and Daughter Team
Share A Passion For Design
Pieces is the brainchild of mother-and-daughter team, Laurie Holland and Jade Johnson. They have a passion for all things interior design and decor, and wanted to offer Amarillo something unique and fun!
Laurie is originally from Clovis, New Mexico and raised her four kids; Jennifer, Jason, Jordan, and Jade in Levelland, Texas then Clovis, California. In 2007 they relocated back “home” and have lived in Canyon for 11 years. Laurie’s husband, Dick is a feed broker and now owns his own business, Triangle Commodity Brokers, and contributes his accounting services to the store! Prior to starting Pieces, Laurie was working full time in administration at Northwest Texas Hospital as an executive assistant. She has an extensive background as a designer - landscape, interior, and graphic. After leaving NWTHS, she returned to school and received her degree in Interior Design from Amarillo College. She has been doing freelance design work on the side for many years. She is the ultimate DIYer and her creative and innovative prospective gives her a passion for catering to clients wants and needs.
Jade graduated from Massage Therapy school and moved back to Texas in 2008. After marrying her husband, Michael, they lived in Lubbock for 8 years before getting transferred to Amarillo 2 years ago. Michael is a conductor with BNSF railway and loves to contribute to the store with his interest in woodworking. Jade has been a full time stay at home mom for the past 6 years to her to boys, Schaefer (6) and McCoy (4). All the while, she worked in the design trade through the store. While she is formally trained as a massage therapist, her true passion has always been in design and decorating.
Founded in 2011 in Lubbock, Texas, the business has grown from a 4’x8’ rented booth-space inside KK’s Corner Mall to the 4000 square foot building now known as Pieces – A Design Mercantile, located in Amarillo, Texas across from the Home Depot off of Georgia.
“I was the one who initially asked mom to help me with this,” Jade says. “Mom has always connected with her kids through interior design, helping all of us redo and decorate our houses. We work really well as a duo and there is no one I would rather do this with.” Laurie says that when Jade asked her to set up the booth years ago in Lubbock, she jumped at the opportunity, loving it so much she opened a similar space at Vintage Living in Amarillo in 2013. When Jade’s husband got transferred to Amarillo, recently, they chose to close the Lubbock location; both were thrilled to take on a larger location inside Vintage Living. Then last year, they fell in love with a building and decided to take the plunge and open up their very own and much larger location at 2740 Duniven Circle. In October 2018, Pieces was reborn when they opened their store which includes thoughtfully curated, new and vintage furniture and décor; lots of gift ideas for men, women, and children; a line of custom t-shirts; as well as full interior design service. They have carefully chosen lines they believe in including Duke Cannon, Murchison Hume, and Hester & Cooke.
The secret to making their professional relationship work is to play off each other’s thoughts and ideas. It’s impressive that they’ve been able to channel their complementary strengths into a successful business. The secret to their success has been listening to their intuition while still paying attention to customers wants and needs. Every customer who steps into the store is treated to a mix of distinctive home goods and heirloom wares. Their style typically does not lean toward trends, in stead they stock products that are going to be around years from now. They want people to feel good about walking into the store; and inspire them to make their homes a place they love.
Jade and Laurie believe their store will be one of your favorite places to shop. While the store is packed full of unique, fun, new, and vintage home furnishings, there is also a kids play room, where you’ll usually find Jade’s boys hanging out, and a classroom/party room available for rent. This is a great space for baby or wedding showers, bunco groups, girl’s nights, and other group get togethes! They schedule Make & Take classes; as well as bring in local artisans to teach and share their talents. As designers, the pair believes their success is a testament to their relationship and that they work well together to create comfortable environments in their clients’ homes.
Whether you need a complete home makeover or simply a gift for a new baby, they can help. Pieces should be your new favorite store!
